Have you met Shannyn Reid?

Shannyn Reid is a visual artist who is currently working out of one of the studio spaces at the Rotary Arts Centre.

She has recently completed her Master of Fine Arts, and is continuing with a series that started during that time, creating embroidered grocery bags with organza fabric. Reid has made a variety of bags, including a 1:1 scale Sobeys bag that took 300 hours to complete, and an oversized Walmart bag (embroidered with wool) that completely covers the wall in her studio. A precursor to the shopping bags was a series of embroidered grocery lists that she created based off of found shopping lists.

Since starting this series during her Bachelor of Fine Arts (2021), Reid has embroidered 50-60 of the lists, and collected about 2000 of them. Ephemera, little things, and day to day life items like grocery lists and shopping bags have always inspired her, as she has collected items such as these and put them into junk journals that she creates out of scrapbook paper, chip board, and fabric (and most recently leather).

Reid considers herself to be a maker, and embroidery to be a meditative process. She plans on continuing with the bag series while working in this studio space, creating more anonymous thank-you bags as opposed to brand name bags.

Thanks Shannyn for your creativity and your presence at RAC!
